DEFINITION

  • A sequence of nucleotides in a DNA molecule that has the potential to encode a peptide or protein. An ORF contains a start triplet (ATG), which is followed by a series of triplets (each of which encodes an amino acid), and ends with a stop codon (TAA, TAG or TGA). The term is generally applied to sequences of DNA fragments for which no function has yet been determined.
