DEFINITION

  • Programs, actions initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for people living in poverty. Poverty alleviation encompasses two discrete meanings, namely poverty mitigation and poverty reduction. Poverty mitigation implies that people are prevented from becoming poorer whereas poverty reduction describes a situation where people are being lifted out of poverty (Angelsen and Wunder 2003).
